Nathan’s parents, Julie and Ron, were initially angry, but soon chose to support the baby. April’s mother was also shocked, yet allowed her daughter to decide whether to continue the pregnancy. Once baby Jamie was born, both families stepped in to help the young parents adjust.
Jamie arrived in November 2010 by emergency C-section, weighing 8 lbs 14 oz. He had a malformed oesophagus that made feeding difficult, but after surgery and 11 days in the hospital, he recovered and went home healthy.
April and Jamie lived with her family, sharing a room with her sister, while Nathan stayed with his parents nearby. Despite the challenges, April said she was determined to be a good mother, while Nathan hoped to share custody — though their relationship was uncertain and they weren’t sure if they would stay together.
