He Spent a Fortune Covering His Body in Tattoos — Wait Until You See What He Looked Like Before!

A man from Birmingham, England, who legally changed his name to King Of Ink Land King Body Art The Extreme Ink-ite, has stunned many after sharing rare photos that reveal just how different he looked before his dramatic body transformation. Formerly known as Mathew Whelan, the 45-year-old began altering his appearance in 2008 and has since spent more than £40,000 and around 1,600 hours on tattoos and body modifications — earning a reputation as one of the UK’s most recognizable tattoo devotees.

Images from his teenage years paint a striking contrast. Back then, he was clean-cut and completely tattoo-free, almost impossible to recognize today. At just 16, he got his first tattoo — a bulldog — unknowingly setting the stage for a lifelong commitment to extreme body art. Over the years, his transformation has included full-face tattoos, black sclera (tattooed eyeballs), nipple removal, and reshaped ears.

Yet his appearance has created unexpected obstacles. Facial recognition systems sometimes struggle to identify him, occasionally flagging his face as a mask and preventing access to certain online platforms, including live webcam services. He considers this a form of discrimination, insisting that his modified face is simply an authentic expression of who he is.

Daily life can also bring uncomfortable moments. He says people often avoid sitting near him on public transportation, while others snap photos without asking — encounters that can quickly turn tense. His experience sheds light on the social challenges that often accompany unconventional self-expression.

Recently, King Of Ink Land revealed he is pressing pause on additional modifications to prioritize financial stability and focus on paying off his £66,000 mortgage. While he continues to see body art as a meaningful lifestyle rather than an obsession, he plans to slow the pace — possibly adding new tattoos only every couple of years — and is even considering removing some implants, including one in his hand.

For now, his story stands as a powerful reminder of the price, both personal and financial, that can come with choosing to live boldly and unapologetically.
