On a warm July night in Pascagoula, what began as an ordinary evening for a group of teenagers turned into a life-or-death emergency that would leave an entire community stunned.
Near the banks of the Pascagoula River, a car carrying three teenage girls suddenly sped down a dark boat launch and plunged straight into the water around 2:30 a.m. In seconds, confusion turned to panic as the vehicle began to sink beneath the surface.
Authorities later reported that the driver had been following GPS directions and didn’t realize she was heading down an unlit ramp. In the darkness, there were few visual warnings to signal that the “road” ahead ended in the river.
Standing nearby was 16-year-old Corion Evans. Without hesitation, he ran toward the water and jumped in. Battling strong currents and the weight of soaked clothing, he managed to help the girls escape the sinking vehicle and guided them toward safety. When a responding police officer also entered the water and began struggling against the current, Evans returned again — ensuring the officer made it back safely as well.
In a matter of minutes, what could have ended in tragedy became a story of remarkable courage. Evans’ split-second decision and refusal to stand by ultimately saved four lives.
