Last summer, Dallas Dog Rescue Rehab Reform received an urgent call about a small puppy who had been abandoned on a flooded baseball field in South Texas. With heavy rain pouring down and water rising quickly, the rescue team rushed to the scene, knowing the puppy needed immediate help. When they arrived, the conditions made it difficult to see anything clearly. The rain was relentless, and at first, the puppy was nowhere in sight. After carefully searching the field, one of the rescuers finally spotted him sitting completely still on an old onion sack, soaked through, cold, and trembling.
The puppy didn’t try to run or make a sound. He simply stayed where he was, as if he truly believed someone would come back for him. It was painfully clear that he didn’t realize he had been abandoned. He waited patiently, holding onto the hope that his family would return. According to the rescue, the puppy had almost given up by the time they found him.
Once safely brought to the Dallas DogRRR facility, the extent of his condition became clear. He was extremely weak, starving, and covered in hundreds of ticks. Despite everything he had been through, his gentle nature stood out immediately. The staff could tell he had been around people before and just wanted comfort and love.
With medical treatment, proper food, and care, the puppy began to recover faster than anyone expected. Each day, he grew stronger, more confident, and more trusting. The rescue team named him Slugger, a tribute to his determination to survive even after being left behind.
Within a few weeks, Slugger was almost unrecognizable from the frightened puppy found in the flooded field. His playful personality began to shine, and his foster mom discovered his favorite habit—gathering all his toys into one big pile on his bed. Watching Slugger’s transformation from a terrified, abandoned puppy into a happy, thriving dog was nothing short of incredible.
