“Anyone know what this is? Found it on my son’s scalp and I’m freaking out a little 😳👇”

Most bumps on the scalp are harmless — but identifying them early can ease discomfort and help you spot when something more serious needs attention.

Many people focus on their hair but forget that the scalp plays a huge role in hair health. When the scalp becomes irritated, you may notice flakes, redness, or small bumps. According to the National Institutes of Health, a healthy scalp supports healthy hair, while an unhealthy one can lead to itching, rashes, sores, and even hair loss.

Sometimes bumps are obvious; other times you only notice them when brushing or when someone else points them out. Often they’re caused by clogged follicles or mild irritation, but knowing the cause helps you understand whether home remedies are enough — or if a doctor is necessary.

1. Why Scalp Issues Happen

The scalp reacts quickly to things like genetics, hygiene habits, environmental factors, and infections. Conditions such as dandruff are common, but others like seborrheic dermatitis (oily flakes and redness) or folliculitis (small, painful pus-filled bumps) can look very similar. That’s why proper diagnosis matters.

2. Common Causes of Scalp Bumps

  • Seborrheic dermatitis: Greasy yellow flakes, itching, irritation

  • Folliculitis: Infected follicles that create painful red bumps

  • Pilar cysts: Harmless, round, fluid-filled lumps under the skin

  • Psoriasis: Thick red patches with silvery scales

Understanding these helps narrow down what you may be dealing with.

3. Psoriasis Vulgaris Basics

This is the most common form of psoriasis and happens when the immune system speeds up skin-cell growth. It creates red, scaly patches that may itch or crack. There’s no cure, but symptoms can be managed. Triggers include genetics, stress, infections, cold weather, and certain medications.

4. Helpful Home Remedies

If you can’t get a doctor’s appointment right away, these may offer relief:

  • Coconut oil or aloe vera: Moisturize and soften thick scales when left on for several hours

  • Diluted apple cider vinegar: May reduce itching due to natural antiseptic properties

  • Gentle sunlight exposure: Can slow rapid skin-cell buildup

If symptoms worsen, spread quickly, or cause pain, it’s best to seek medical care as soon as you can.
