Coins are everywhere—tucked into drawers, jars, wallets, and even couch cushions. Most of the time, we don’t think twice about them. But every once in a while, an ordinary-looking coin turns out to be worth far more than its face value. And lately, one penny in particular has collectors buzzing.
According to reports from Coin Trackers, the New York Post, KHOU, and Daily Mail UK, a 1943 copper wheat penny in mint condition could be worth over $85,000 😮
During World War II, copper was needed for military supplies, so the U.S. Mint switched to steel pennies in 1943. However, a small number of copper blanks from previous years accidentally slipped into the minting process. These rare “mistake” coins are now among the most valuable pennies ever produced.
Experts say that a mint-condition 1943 copper wheat penny can fetch prices in the $85,000 range, while even coins in lesser condition have sold for an average of $60,000, according to Coin Trackers.
Saul Teichman, a U.S. Mint error specialist, explained to CoinWeek that demand from collectors plays a huge role in the coin’s value:
“1943 copper cents have a special cachet with collectors. As for market value, the 1943 cents sell for much more than other errors struck around the same time.”
He added that although some World War II coin errors are actually rarer, they don’t command nearly the same prices because they lack the historical appeal and recognition of the 1943 copper penny.
So before you toss that old penny aside, it might be worth taking a closer look—you could be holding a small fortune in the palm of your hand.
