Here’s What to Do If You Spot a Lone Star Tick

I felt it before I saw it. A tiny, crawling itch on my ankle that didn’t feel like any mosquito bite I’d ever had. One glance down and my stomach dropped. That black speck wasn’t flying away. It was burrowed in. A lone star tick. On me. In my own backyard. Under my oak tree, in the same patch of grass where I drink my coffee and let the dog wander every morning.

For a few seconds, I just stared at it.

It seemed impossible that something so small could trigger such immediate fear. But I knew enough about ticks to understand why people panic when they find one attached to their skin. They aren’t just unpleasant—they can sometimes carry diseases and leave behind weeks or even months of worry.

I froze, then forced myself to move.

I grabbed a pair of fine-tipped tweezers, my hands shaking more than I wanted to admit. Carefully, I gripped the tick as close to my skin as possible and pulled straight upward, terrified I would twist it or leave part of it behind. When it finally released, I felt an odd mixture of relief and disgust.

I washed the area thoroughly with soap and water, then disinfected it again for good measure.

I sealed the tick inside a small plastic bag and wrote down the date, the time, and exactly where it had attached itself. It felt overly cautious at the time, but suddenly every piece of advice I had ever heard about ticks seemed incredibly important.

That night, I barely slept.

Every little sensation in my body made me anxious. A slight headache? Was it stress or the beginning of something else? A sore muscle? Was I imagining it? I checked the bite several times before finally turning off the light, only to wake up and check it again a few hours later.

The next morning, I started reading.

I learned that lone star ticks are common in many parts of the United States and are known for the distinctive white spot on the backs of adult females. They can be found in wooded areas, tall grass, gardens, and even suburban backyards. They don’t jump or fly, but they are surprisingly aggressive and can latch onto people and pets simply by brushing against vegetation.

I also discovered something that made my stomach sink even further: these ticks have been linked to several illnesses and, in some cases, a strange condition called alpha-gal syndrome, which can cause an allergic reaction to red meat after a tick bite.

Suddenly, the tiny bite on my ankle felt much bigger.

Over the next several days, I watched for any signs that something might be wrong. Fever. Rash. Fatigue. Joint pain. I paid attention to every change, even though most tick bites never lead to serious illness.

Thankfully, nothing happened.

The redness around the bite slowly faded, and the anxiety eventually eased.

But the experience changed me.

Now, every time I come in from the yard, I check my legs, my socks, and even behind my knees. I wear long pants when working near tall grass, use insect repellent more often, and make sure my pets are protected too.

Because finding that tiny tick taught me something I never expected:

Sometimes the biggest scares come in the smallest packages.

And sometimes a quiet afternoon in your own backyard can remind you just how important it is to pay attention to the little things.
