Spanish matador shares gruesome details of awful injuries after ‘most painful goring ever’

Spanish bullfighter Morante de la Puebla is facing a long and painful road to recovery after a shocking incident in the ring left him seriously injured.

The 46-year-old matador—often referred to as the “King of Bullfighters”—was gored during a performance at Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza in Seville. What began as a routine appearance quickly turned into a life-threatening emergency, requiring urgent surgery that lasted several hours.

Speaking afterward from his hospital bed, Puebla described the moment with raw honesty, recalling not only the physical pain but the overwhelming fear that followed.

“I was in immense pain, felt a lot of fear because I saw the bull had grabbed me and, well, I thought I was bleeding,” he said in a video shared online.

The incident was especially unexpected given how the performance had unfolded up to that point. Puebla had already faced three bulls successfully, displaying the calm control and artistry that have defined his decades-long career. The crowd had been engaged, the atmosphere steady—until everything changed in an instant.

The bull charged suddenly, catching him off guard. In the split second that followed, Puebla lost grip of his cape—an essential tool in maintaining distance and control. That brief moment of exposure proved critical. The bull struck with force, and the goring immediately halted the performance.

Fellow matadors rushed into the ring without hesitation, pulling him away from danger as the crowd looked on in stunned silence. He was quickly carried out of the arena and taken to the infirmary before being rushed into surgery.

At first, Puebla feared the worst. In the chaos and adrenaline of the moment, it was difficult to understand how severe the injury truly was. He later admitted that he believed he might not survive. But once doctors assessed the situation, there was a small measure of relief—while serious, the bleeding was not as catastrophic as he had initially feared.

“By the time I got to the infirmary and saw that the bleeding was minimal, I relaxed quite a bit, but of course, it hurt a lot,” he explained.
“Without a doubt, it was the most painful goring ever.”

Even so, the aftermath has been anything but easy.

Puebla described ongoing pain, exhaustion, and difficulty performing even basic tasks. Sleep has been elusive, and his appetite has disappeared. For the first time in his life, he is being fed through an intravenous catheter—a detail that underscores the severity of his condition.

“The truth is, I’m in a lot of pain,” he said.

The injury, sustained in a particularly sensitive area, is expected to keep him out of the arena for a significant period. While no official timeline has been confirmed, recovery is likely to be slow, requiring both physical rehabilitation and careful medical supervision.

Beyond the personal toll on Puebla, the incident has once again reignited the ongoing debate surrounding bullfighting in Spain.

For supporters, bullfighting remains a deeply rooted cultural tradition—an art form tied to history, identity, and national heritage. For critics, particularly animal rights advocates, events like this highlight not only the risks faced by matadors but also the ethical concerns surrounding the treatment of animals in the ring.

Each high-profile injury tends to amplify these opposing views, bringing renewed calls for reform—or even a complete ban—while others continue to defend the practice as an integral part of Spanish culture.

For now, however, the focus remains on Puebla himself.

His experience is a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of the arena. No matter how experienced or skilled a matador may be, the risk is always present—waiting in a single moment where control slips and instinct takes over.

And in those moments, everything can change.
